We’re so excited to welcome the work of French artist, Laurent Treboult, to The English Listed gallery this month.
Since we first met Laurent back in January 2018, he has been incredibly busy producing work for us and we’re now proudly display four of his pieces in the gallery.
You can read more about Laurent’s work in this lovely interview translated from French design blog Clem around The Corner.
Laurent Trébout has had a varied past career ranging from a physicist, then a salesman and finally a computer scientist. he was first captivated by photography before embarking on ceramics and finally turning to sculpture as a passion. His artistic aesthetic has evolved from a colourful period, followed by a more introspective darker phase which has in turn lead to a phase that he now describes a “romantic”.

Laurent enjoys working with not just ceramics but a variety of materials including wood and metal. Telling a story via his piece is central to his work, rather than an inherent interest in the materials personally se. What the creator is looking for (or rather, what comes to find him) is this ability to tell a story through his sculptures. Far from the simple desire for aesthetic satisfaction, Laurent Trébout seeks to bring to life the scenes he proposes through his sculptures. For this, he opted for authenticity and sobriety, whether in materials or forms. For him, it is the rough edges of the wood or the imperfect finish of the burning compared to a black painting that bring warmth and character to his works.
It’s for this reason that Laurent decided to bring light into his sculptures. But as Mr. Trébout points out, the light is also dark. Thus, with the addition of this new component, the interest of the work moves out of the object. Projected on a wall, the story takes another form. It is subject to other interpretations. And it changes according to the other sources of light or according to the place where the work is put.
