Bringing the Outdoors In

This beautiful, contemporary home sits within the heart of a popular Cambridgeshire village and has been transformed by The English Listed from an out-grown bungalow to a light and spacious family home.

Involving our full spectrum of services from architectural design, interior design and planning consultancy through to the build and project management throughout, we have recently completed the redevelopment of a lovely contemporary home in Cambridgeshire.

Our clients and their family were finding their 1950s bungalow too small for their growing family, but loved the village, local community and their beautiful garden.   Our brief was to create a generous, contemporary family home suitable for modern day living by creating a new master suite, a new bathroom and a large open plan living/dining/kitchen area.  Making sure the house had an abundance of storage, whilst maintaining a warm, relaxed, contemporary style was key in answering the family’s needs.  At the same time our challenge was to provide a discreet solution to maximising the space whilst conforming to planning requirements.

At the heart of our design is a stunning, glazed courtyard that ensures all rooms throughout the ground floor are flooded with light, particularly what could have been a dark internal hallway. The courtyard provides a focal point to the ground floor and draws one in, harmoniously linking the interior with nature, and allowing light in from every aspect. A new extension creates a spacious living area, with warmth and texture added to the room from a brick-faced feature wall.  Huge, aluminium double-glazed sliding patio doors and two large rooflights make this a light-filled space for the family to enjoy. A soleil-brise on the exterior provides shade to the room on sunnier days.

The large vaulted kitchen has been updated with a smart new anthracite and oak handleless kitchen topped off with a central island incorporating a breakfast bar.

A spectacular, sculptural staircase, custom-produced in-house by our joiners in oak, emphasises the dramatic double height vaulted ceiling of the hallway and in turn leads to a newly created first floor housing a new master suite.  An oversized dormer and a generous skylights in the master bedroom ensure that the room is bright, and offers a quiet, contemporary statement with sweeping views across the garden. Bespoke wardrobes complete one wall in a deep inky blue finished off with smart leather tab handle detailing.  The ensuite bathroom features a contemporary wall hung basin, stylish Mandarin Stone scallop-pattern wall tiles and beautiful Crosswater brassware in satin brassware.  Echoing the contemporary look and feel of the stairwell, oak flooring is also used for the landing.

Our interiors team used a palette of light, natural materials including contemporary light oak and juxtaposed with a rich inky blue-black throughout the house for cabinetry and wardrobes and feature walls.  Walls throughout are decorated in Little Greene’s light chalky paintwork in soft greys.  A stylish new family bathroom maintains this light, modern aesthetic through the use of smart white subway tiles and chrome brassware and all the laundry essentials required for busy family life are discretely hidden in a practical utility cupboard that can be closed off when not in use.

We’re delighted with this lovely project and wish our clients have many happy years to come enjoying their home.
